Bike to Work Month Recap: May 2023

BY

Teagan Miller

Cycling spotlight

Between May 1 and 31st, our team biked. A lot. 858 miles, to be exact.

May is National Bike Month, so we wanted to do something fun and active to mark the occasion. We joined Lexington’s Love to Ride challenge to compete for the most miles biked in May, both locally and nationally.

Our team tracked their bicycle mileage on the Love to Ride platform (it's fun, we recommend it) to see how we stacked up. Lexington’s local support team was super helpful and encouraging.

Mediocre also sponsored some of Lexington's prizes, providing four $250 Broomwagon gift cards. These were awarded to four Lexingtonians drawn at random as a prize for their participation in the challenge.

At the end of the month, we did a group bike ride out to Windy Corner Market (a 14-mile round trip) and celebrated with some prizes and a long outdoor lunch.

Last but not least, we installed two bike racks on our office front porch, expanding our secure covered bike parking. We’ve wanted to do this for a couple years now, but having Bike Month gave us the accountability we needed to create a self-imposed deadline.

What keeps us riding

Aside from the sheer joy of cycling, we wanted to punch up our commitment to being a bike-friendly business and actively promote biking as a company in deed as well as in name.

Here's what a few of our team members had to say (these quotes are from our Love to Ride profiles):

I ride because my bike looks sick. – Elizabeth
I ride because I like to feel the wind in my (leg) hair. – Stevie
I ride because it’s the journey, not the destination. – Teagan
I ride because I like the wind in my hair. – Dana
I ride because sauce bediri. (PALINDROMES!) – Bronson
I ride because I own a bike. – Shawn

How we stacked up

We finished #1 on the Lexington leaderboard for workplaces with 7-19 staff, and 9th for the U.S. overall for the same size group.

Here are some stats for our team for the month of May. Check out our Love to Ride workplace for more details.

Incentives

To get everyone excited for Bike to Work month, we created some fun incentives for our team.

Team members that logged at least 25 bike miles during the month of May received a $50 cash bonus.

For business-related miles biked (to the office, meetings, work errands, etc), we sent double our standard bike mileage reimbursement (=$0.50/mile).

As a grand prize for the most miles biked of our team in May: Airpods Pro!

We also chose bike-able destinations for our Thursday company-paid lunches. We went to Kentucky Native Cafe, Smithtown Seafood, and (as mentioned above) Windy Corner Market.
